Necromunda Terrain: Scrap Wastes Rework.

Sometimes things just don’t turn out the way you expected. Which is what happened with the scrap wastes piece I thought I had pretty much finished off.

image

I used up a truck load of premium bits and all I got was a bunch of impassable terrain. I didn’t like the single level of the place. So I added a few more elements.

image

A large gothic structural thing and some more convoluted pipe works. I can add some catwalks to the pipes and even toss some of my movable bridge walks over to it.

I’m happier now, even though the piece is much busier visually. I think I’ve increased its gaming potential with the additions.

Comments always appreciated.

By the way, I’m hoping to have this table ready for Historicon this year.

Necromunda Terrain: Pollution Factory and Elevated Highway

Posted on January 8, 2012 - Comments Off - Modeling, Terrain

I have a small update on the Necromunda table I’m building. I installed some pipe work and platforms on the pollution factory/ chem plant. I also did a bit of trim work on the over pass so that it would fit together better and then I set it up.

The over pass needs a lot of details yet. It’ll get underslung pipes, shanties, and probably a few sections ripped out to allow ladders and ramshackle stairways in. One section will get a Scavvies camp underneath and the other will get a fungus jungle complete with giant spider webs… and giant spiders (Thanks to Branson).

I’m hoping to paint the spiders up to make them look like they glow in the dark. Check in for more progress soon.

Necromunda Terrain: Pollution Factory, Road House/Brothel, and more!

Posted on December 2, 2011 - Comments (1) - Modeling

Spent some more quality time in the workshop (basement). I’ve added two new pieces to the necromunda table and I’ve added a ton of detailing to the pieces already in progress. I made a lot of ladders I can move around on the shanty towns which I’ve begun calling Soot Town Heights.

I built a bridge over the Soot Town Heights toxic sludge pond. I can’t wait to get some glowing green sludge in there.

I’ve added a large field of wreckage and junk. It also features some sort of abandoned engine/machinery. This should contrast nicely with the tall pieces and give the gangers some relatively open ground to scrap on. I added a few pipes and detail bits to the large red chemical tank piece, but it is far from complete.

I figured every good underhive settlement needs a seedy watering hole so I scratched up a bar/brothel from cereal box card board, plasticard and a few bits. I really like the way it turned out and now I want to build and entire main street of town area, which resembles an old west type town. It has it’s own water tower and saloon style doors. The surrounding area needs a lot of detailing but I think the building is mostly finished. Except for the signage, which goes up on the roof. It’s a big billboard with one of those mudflap girl silhouettes. I’m taking suggestions for off color names for the place. So far all I have is the age old tag line, “Liquor in the front. Poker in the rear.” Yuk yuk yuk!

I swapped out the vents on the pollution factories cooling towers. I also laid out the fittings for the pipe works design. Now I just have to cut all the interconnecting pipe pieces and assemble the whole mess. It should be nice and visually complicated when I’m done, but still have room to move around above and beneath.

I am definitely having a good time building all this mess. I’ll leave you with two POV shots I found appealing.

Thanks for reading.

Reaper Miniatures Store!

Posted on November 29, 2011 - Comments Off - News!

Goblin Mini Mart is the result of a long lasting friendship. Recently I was able to pay back some of the scale tipping favors I owe by flying down to Texas and helping my friend Matt (who built and maintains this website) move into his first house. That’s right, mofo is now a Home Owner! He has a beautiful house new outside of Dallas/Fort Worth, which I discovered is not far from Denton, TX. Home of Reaper Miniatures. Needless to say we had to make a trip out there. The place is rather unassumingly situated in a corrugated warehouse space, hidden in an industrial park.

But inside was a fully stocked gaming store just stuffed full of Reaper goodness. Now it’s not like you can’t buy anything at anytime over the internets, but there is just something special about standing in a real game store chock full of the things you love.

They also had a killer back room full of painting stations with free access to all their paints. I’m a bit sad I didn’t have time to try it out.

But we had a keg of Shiner to pick up for Matt’s house warming (wrecking) party so we bought our own weight in miniatures (weresharks everywhere!) and hit the road.

I was a happy man.

Necromunda Terrain: Shanty Town Riot!

Posted on November 8, 2011 - Comments Off - Modeling

I love Necromunda every last bit of it, from the worst mutant infested underhive crawl to glittering 80′s hairstyles of the spire nobles. Sadly I’ve only ever played it once. Something I decided to rectify earlier this year and after hunting down several versions of the rule books from used book sellers and dropping some cash into ebay auctions for various vintage gang models I was ready to go. Then life came along and underhive gang wars were swept aside for things far less awesome yet far more necessary. So eight months later I found myself back in the basement with three huge tubs of bits, a great pile of cardboard from the recycle bin, and a big bottle of craft glue. Below are the results of the project so far. It is all still very WIP. But I’m very excited at this point and I can’t wait to get this stuff painted and play some games.

The shanties are stack up around what would be the huge vent and flues that run all through the underhive. These would keep the huts warm and maybe allow them to leech power or water at the same time.

I thought this style of building would allow players to move their gangers in a Q-bert style up and down the piles of huts. I also have lots and lots of loose gantries which can be placed after the terrain is set.

The over pass is a ruined service road. It still needs extensive detailing and will be getting it’s own piles of shanties and rubbish soon.

I’d love to hear what people think. Advice from veteran players about what terrain types are fun to play on would be greatly appreciated.

Staying Focused: 2010 to do list review.

Posted on January 10, 2011 - Comments Off - Modeling

Last March I was having trouble staying focused on my hobby projects. So I wrote up a long list of the projects in hopes that being able to see everything cataloged in front of me would facilitate me getting some stuff done. This is a wrap up post to show what actually got finished. Below is the list with [COMPLETED] and [BUILT] edits to mark the stuff that I finished building and/or painting. I’m hoping that seeing how much I did will inspire me to get back to work.

Not to shabby, considering I really only worked on stuff the first half of the year. I even finsihed a few things that weren’t on the list, mainly terrain stuff for the city of Vaustgrad.

I’m hoping to be a bit more prolific in 2011. I’ve had to add a few new things to the list since a nice gent gave me a 3000pt WFB Warriors of Chaos Army and I won a whole Necromunda Scavvy gang on ebay. I also have a Necromunda/Forge World table idea I’m really dieing to get started on.

Happy New Year!

It came on Christmas and who could ask for a better present, than free 40k based skirmish rules. Terrain: Cities of Death

Posted on October 11, 2010 - Comments Off - News!

A few days ago I busted out all my CoD terrain and laid it all out. It’s been a while since I had a game at my house and I’ve never used all this stuff at once. I wanted to see how it would go together.

Some of these pieces were made for the Vaustgrad Apocalypse Battle we played at Battle Hymn this year. I wanted to get everything that is complete on the table and see how it looks. I actually have about five little wall sections I forgot to put out.

The mechanicus temple is modular and I’ve only used individual parts of it at a time it I think it looks great for some Cities of Death. I might have to pull some stuff off for a bigger game of regular 40k.

I wish I had piled some orks in there to give some life to the place and make the pics more dynamic. I have a few more pieces in the works. One is a big 12″x24″ park and the other is a huge 24″x24″ three story Basillica, you may have seen pics of in an earlier post here. I think a canal and some bridges are next in line.

Blood for the Blood God!

Posted on October 9, 2010 - Comments Off - News!

A few months ago I drew up some tattoo designs for a contest Dave Taylor was running. The idea was to design a Blood Pact (the chaos renegades from the Dan Abnett’s Gaunt’s Ghosts novel series) insignia, using the classic eight pointed chaos star, the symbol of the blood god Khorne and to wrap it all up with the design from the Ghosts own insignia.

Although Dave didn’t pick my design, I was recently contacted by a gentleman from the UK, who did love it and who wanted to use the design for his own tattoo. I agreed and here it is freshly inked.

I think it turned out great and I’m honored he chose to have my work permanently added to his body. So a big thank you to the newly inked gentleman. Enjoy your new art, it looks great.

Free Warriors of Chaos Army.

Posted on September 29, 2010 - Comments Off - News!

This tale is the stuff of legends. It is hardly believable and I’m still having trouble wrapping my brain around it.

About two weeks ago, I was browsing the /tg/ pages on 4chan. Yeah yeah… 4chan. /tg/ is different. I love it there. There is a gaming community there like no other. So I’m browsing the threads and I see one offering to give a rather large Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Warriors of Chaos army to anyone who is willing to write a short paragraph about why they should receive it. Everyone thought it was a troll thread, and rightly so. If anything those boards are full of clever and dedicated trolls. But what the heck, you can’t win if you don’t play, so here’s what I wrote and sent to the poster in an email:

“I’ve never played Warhammer fantasy, though I’ve always wanted to. I just don’t have the cash flow to support a two system GW habit. I can’t bring myself to buy little plastic men over buying things for my two year old daughter. I love to paint and I’m not bad at it (if I say so myself). I’d do this army justice. I’ll put it online so you can see how your army has lived on in painted infamy. I’ll even post some battle reports. The guys I game with have really become excited about WFB new edition and they really want me to play with them. Why? I’m the fun one. I may not win every time but I always enjoy myself and the other guys enjoy it too. Yesterday, my man, Jenkins gets me to meet him at our FLGS and then he tries to buy me the skaven half of the Island of Blood set (they sell it piece meal there) just to get me into the game. I had to decline as I couldn’t accept the gift knowing I would feel bad having the models sit unassembled and unpainted for so long in my basement, I’d see them all the time and it would keep me up at night. I don’t need to lose sleep over skaven. I want to play WFB with my bros. I love chaos and have for a long long time. I own both realms of chaos books for way back. So when I saw this thread my first reaction was, “huh? whatever…” But then I thought of Jenkins yesterday, offering to buy me 50$ worth of skaven just so I’d play against him. So I thought, what the hell. I’ll check it out. If you don’t pick me, nothing will have been lost. But if you do you’ll be making a whole group of gamers happy, your army will live on bringing the burning hatred of the dark gods to all foes foolish enough to stand against them, and you’ll know they are not just being played, but being thoroughly enjoyed.”

Long story short, here is what I received in the mail from California, about 8 days later.

Dude even paid for the shipping. This is a big ass box.

Individually wrapped with love. I think I got a whole roll of paper towels too.

Everything. It took me 45 minutes to unpack it all.

Juggernaut of Khorne with a nice paint job.

Awesome Chaos Sorcerer with custom flames.

Gigantic Dragon Ogre.

Custom objective marker, very nice.

Hard to see Hellcannon and Chaos Dwarf crew. I love this model so much.

I’m still beside myself. The whole event is very surreal, this kind of thing never happens to me. But it did, and I’m grateful. Thanks Anon, whoever you are. You’ve done yourself and /tg/ proud. Your generosity is epic. Thank you for the awesome army.

I’ll be painting these guys up (over the next 10 years probably) and posting the progress here and on /tg/.

Now I have to get a army book and see how all this stuff goes together.
